STOVE FAILURE DOOMS NORTH POLE EXPEDITION

In an expedition, even failure of the simplest piece of equipment can lead to a potentially deadly situation. Such was the case when broken stoves forced Swede Bjorn Thelin and Petter Reuter of Finland to call for an emergency airlift on Mar. 20 while en route from Greenland to the North Pole.

BURGESS LEADS AMERICAN MUSTAGH TOWER ASCENT

A team of seven American climbers led by Himalayan veteran Adrian Burgess, 47, will lead the two-month American Mustagh Tower Expedition in mid-May.

VIEW FOUNDATION HELPS RUSSIANS CLEAN BASE

The last group of volunteers and staff left Russia's Bellingshausen station on Antarctica's King George Island Mar. 5 after a three-month expedition to clean debris discarded over the past three decades.

JASON PROJECT LINKS KIDS WITH THE CHANGING SEA

Students and teachers will join scientists April 15-26 on an expedition to study the coastal habitats of Southern Florida as part of the Jason Project.

MAYAQUEST '96 CONSIDERS WHAT MAYA DID RIGHT

After a successful 1995 MayaQuest expedition through Mexico and Central America (see EN, May 1995), Dan Buettner and his team of mountain biking explorers returned to Mexico in March for seven weeks of MayaQuest '96.

The Philadelphia Chapter of The Explorers Club will host a two-day conference April 20-21 that will provide proven strategies for funding exploration.

Story of Longitude Becomes Best Seller

An indication of the enduring interest in exploration is "Longitude," a non-fiction book by Dava Sobel that found its way onto the New York Times Best Seller List late last year.
